Today marks the day of the traditional moon festival…it also marks the end of an adventurous week. It’s always an adventure when you change the way you look, especially in a place where looks means a lot. I’ve heard numerous accounts where in China, if you look out of the norm, people will tell you straight up! How’s that for a culture stigmatized for its passiveness? People will let you know if you are too tall, too big, or too not yellow skinned. On the other side, if you are extremely beautiful, they will also let you know! The other day I was waiting in an elevator with this other guy and this other girl. The guy kept staring at the girl..it was plainly obvious how he thought she was attractive. Also, if you’ve ever applied for a job at a Chinese national company, most often than not a picture is required with your resume. Ok, I’m not here to make generalizations about Chinese culture, I’m just stating what I’ve seen and experienced thus far.
Anyways, I made a change to my appearance for better or for worse. In my opinion, the salon I went to disguised my American look with a Fobified haircut. FOB = Fresh Off the Boat in America (term used when describing something of Chinese nature in American culture). FOB in China = Normal. So there you have it, enjoy my week in review picture style.
